Rs 10 lakh seized from a car in Varanasi

Police today seized Rs 10 lakh cash in new currency notes of 2,000 from a car during a vehicle checking drive in Adampur police station area.

The owner of the car, Om Prakash, a native of Siddharthnagar, was stopped during a vehicle checking drive near Rajghat bridge, police said.

During the search of the vehicle Rs 10 lakh, in five separate bundles of Rs 2000 currency notes, was recovered, a statement from the SSP office said.

Unable to furnish any valid documents, the cash was seized and Income tax department was informed, they said, adding the action was taken in the wake of poll code violation, wherein carrying more than Rs 50,000 cash without its valid papers is prohibited.
 

Uttar Pradesh will go to the polls in 7 phases from February 11 to March 8.

Further probe was on, it said.
