Rs 11,000 crore budget for paramilitary forces

A total of Rs 11,000 crore has been allocated for modernisation of central paramilitary forces in the interim budget presented today by Finance Minister P Chidambaram.

The funds will be utilised "for providing state-of-the-art equipment and technology for the Central Armed Police Forces" like CRPF, BSF, ITBP, CISF, SSB and NSG.

The Finance Minister said funds for the purpose have been provided in the current financial year and for next year, an interim budget statement said.

The 9-lakh strong forces are deployed across the country for a variety of internal security duties on the borders and in the hinterland for conducting law and order tasks and anti-Naxal operations.
