A bag containing Rs 15 lakh cash was allegedly stolen by unidentified persons from the car of a village sarpanch here, police said today.

The car, owned by Paras village sarpanch Santosh Dandle, was intercepted by the robbers near the Collectorate Square last evening. They first beat up the car driver and then fled with the bag containing the cash, police said.

Dandle had withdrawn cash from a local bank branch after which he purchased a motorcycle with it. He then asked the car driver to take the four-wheeler to his residence in Adarsh colony and drove away on the bike.

It was when the driver was on his way to Dandle's home that the robbery took place, police said, adding that a case has been registered in this connection and a probe was on.

In another incident, gold jewellery worth about Rs 1.5 lakhs was looted by two unidentified men from a 67-year-old woman.

While Kamal Potkatre was going in an autorickshaw, the two men intercepted the vehicle on Kharap road and asked her to keep all her jewellery in a bag citing security issues in the area. While she was keeping the ornaments in the bag, the two men snatched it from her and fled with the valuables.

A complaint was filed by the woman at Ramdas Peth police station. No arrest has been made so far in this case, police added.
