The Union government has sanctioned Rs 196.51 crore for construction of an all-weather fishing harbour at nearby Kulai, Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel said today.

Addressing reporters here, he said the department of animal husbandry, dairy and fisheries, jointly with New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT), would pitch in with upto 45 per cent of the project cost (Rs 88.43 crore)

The Shipping ministry would put in 50 per cent (Rs 98.25 crore), while the Karnataka government would contribute five percent (Rs 9.83 crore) of the overall project cost, he said.

Kateel said the fishing harbour would come up on 10 acres of land under the Union government. It would comprise two open spaces, a boat repair shed and restroom for fishermen.

Around 600 boats could be accommodated at the harbour, considerably reducing the pressure on old Mangaluru fishing harbour, he said.

The project would provide employment to about 2,500 local fishermen, he added.
