A gang of robbers decamped with a cash of around Rs 20,000 from a temple near here today after threatening the watchman on duty, police said.

The robbers, whose number was not known, targeted the Pimpleshwar Mahadeo Mandir at Sagaon village in the wee hours. They picked up the watchman on duty and took him to a room in the premises on a knife point. The burglars threatened to harm the guard if he tried to raise an alam, they said.

While two thieves held the watchman captive, the other gang members broke open the temple's door and pulled out the 'hundi' (donation pot), from where they collected the currency notes, totalling around Rs 20,000, and fled, said S S Shevale, Assistant Police Inspector from Manpada.

A case has been registered against unidentified persons and a hunt launched for the robbers, police added.
