Over 600 jewellers in and around the city downed shutters to protest the Centre's decision on the need of PAN card for purchase of jewellery worth Rs two lakh and above.
The one day closure has affected business worth Rs 25 crore and the Government should increase the ceiling to Rs 10 lakh, the sources in the Federation of Jewellery and Manufacturers, said.
Besides jewellers, there are 10,000 gold smithies, 250 gold suppliers and 1,000 workers related to various segments and some 50,000 workers depended on gold trade, they said.
This being a token closure, the future course of action will be decided after discussing with the National association in Mumbai, depending on the response from the Centre, the sources said.
