Rs 30 lakh gold seized from passenger at Chennai airport

Customs officials today seized 900 grams of gold worth Rs 30 lakh from a passenger who arrived from Dubai at the airport here.

Acting on a tip, customs officials interrogated the passenger identified as Shameel, hailing from Kerala, and checked his baggage after he arrived from Dubai by an Etihad Airways flight, airport authorities said.

He was found carrying 900 grams of gold in his hand baggage, they said adding the passenger was arrested for attempting to smuggle the precious metal.

Meanwhile, an Air India flight bound for Kuwait via Hyderabad from here was cancelled as the pilot fell sick ahead of its departure.
 

The flight had been cancelled and would leave tomorrow morning, the authorities said.

Some of the passengers bound for Hyderabad were sent by other airlines, the others had been accommodated at various hotels in the city, they added.
