Gold jewellery worth Rs 4.7 crore, being transported in a car without proper document, were seized by election officials near here today.

Officials said a flying squad on a routine vehicle check intercepted the car coming from Madurai at Tholurpatti near Thottiyam, about 50 km from here, and found the jewellery.

The occupant of the car said he was an employee of a Madurai-based jeweller and taking the jewels to Tiruchirappalli and Salem.

However, he could not produce supporting documents, following which the jewelleries were seized.
