In a daring heist, armed robbers today looted Rs 42.77 lakh from a Canara Bank branch under Sohsarai police station area in Bihar's Nalanda district, a police officer said.

Three motorcycle-borne armed miscreants barged into the Canara Bank branch located in Sohsarai market and held the cashier and other employees hostage at gun-point for a brief period before looting Rs 42.77 lakh from the bank's strong room before escaping with the booty, Superintendent of Police (SP) Vivekanand said.

The miscreants also assaulted some bank employees and snatched mobile phones from them, he said.

A probe was on in the matter and raids were being carried out to nab the culprits, the SP said.

The bank robbery happened on a day when Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, a native of Nalanda district, was scheduled to pay a visit to his home district for which security was already beefed up.
