Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O Panneerselvam today announced Rs five lakh solatium to the next of kin of Syed Mohammed who was killed when a Sub-Inspector allegedly opened fire in self defence in Ramanathapuram.

Condoling his death, Panneerselvam said Sub-Inspector A Kalidoss has been suspended and an inquiry is on by a judicial magistrate.

"I have ordered release of Rs five lakh to the kin of Syed Mohammed from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund," he said in a statement here.

On October 14, Syed Mohammed was brought to SP Pattinam Police Station in Ramanathapuram District for an enquiry on charges of extortion and Sub-Inspector Kalidoss questioned him.

Syed allegedly stabbed the police officer after which he opened fire to protect himself, police had said.

Following condemnation from various quarters and protests by Muslim outfits, the sub-inspector was placed under suspension.
