Punjab government today sanctioned Rs 50 crore for the upgradation of infrastructure in government colleges across the state.

Presiding over a meeting of the principals of government colleges here, Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal said the state government was duty bound to revitalise the higher education in the state.

The state government has already conducted a survey in the government colleges about their immediate needs, he said.

According to this survey, the estimates of work have been prepared by the Higher Education Department.

Badal said in the first phase Rs 50 crore would be released by the state government for the upgradation of the infrastructure in the colleges.

The Chief Minister said it was unfortunate that around 1,500 posts of teaching and non-teaching staff in the government colleges were lying vacant, adversely effecting the education in these institutions.

He asked the officers of the Education department to explore all feasibilities for filling sanctioned posts at the earliest.
