Rs 55.96 lakh foreign currencies seized from 2 passengers

: Foreign currency worth Rs 59.66 lakh has been seized from two Thailand bound passengers by officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence.

The officials acted on a tip off that foreign currency was being smuggled in mobile phones,power banks and shoe boxes and intercepted the two passengers at the Anna International terminal here last night after noticing their suspicious movements, a DRI press release said.

Initial investigations revealed that the duo -- Mohammed Riyaz Den and Abdul Basith hid the notes in their shoes.

They had kept some more foreign currency in two boxes under the pretext of carrying power banks and mobile phones.
 

The foreign currency seized included USD, Euro and Pounds with a total value of Rs 59.66 lakh, adding the two passengers were arrested.
