Seventy-seven kg of processed sea cucumber worth Rs 7.7 lakh, meant to be smuggled to Sri Lanka, was seized by coastal marine police at a village near Mandapam this morning.
The sea cucumbers were seized from Marakaiyarpattinam village and one person was arrested in this connection, police said.
Sea cucumbers, which play an important role in maintaining the marine ecological system, have been classified as endangered species and their harvest banned under the Wildlife Protection Act.
