Rs 7 lakh compensation to kin of victims of Uttarakhand flood

A compensation of Rs seven lakh each has been given to families of persons from Tamil Nadu killed in the flood fury in Uttarakhand in June last.

Kin of the 14 persons killed in floods and landslides in

Kedarnath and Badrinath received the compensation by way of cheques on Monday from Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, an official release said today.

The amount included Rs two lakh from the Prime Minister's

General Relief Fund, Rs 1.50 lakh from Uttarakhand Disaster Management Relief Fund and Rs 3.50 lakh announced by the state government, totalling Rs seven lakh.

A total of 657 pilgrims hailing from the state who were
 

stranded in Uttarakhand had been rescued on the directions of Jayalalithaa and brought to the state and sent to their respective places, the release said, recalling that the state government had contributed Rs five crore to Uttarakhand for relief works.
