Rs 91 lakh worth gold seized from three AI passengers

Twenty-eight gold bars, weighing 3.5 kg and valued at Rs 91 lakh, have been seized from three passengers, who arrived by an Air India flight from Sharjah at Karipur International airport, near here, officials said today.

All the passengers hail from Kozhikode district.

Air Customs Intelligence officials,, during a check, seized eight gold bars weighing one kg and valued at Rs 26 lakh from Padanilam Abdul Rahim (34) who arrived by the Sharjah-Calicut flight at 11-45 pm yesterday.

"Although he is eligible to bring one kg gold as he stayed one year abroad, he has been detained for not possessing valid documents. He has to pay Rs 2.75 lakh towards customs duty," officials said.
 

Eight gold bars, weighing one kg and worth Rs 26 lakh, were seized from Poovatuparamba Faisal (34) who also arrived by the same flight.

In the third incident, 12 gold bars weighing 1.5 kg and worth Rs 39 lakh were seized from Aboobacker Siddiq (36) of Omassery near here.

Both Aboobacker Siddiq and Faisal have been arrested, they said.
