Steel Melting Shop-II (SMS-II) of Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has created two records by notching up the highest number of blows in a single shift as well as on a single day on April 3, 2014.

On the day, SMS-II made 20 blows in 'C' shift and 54 blows in all the three shifts, RSP said in a release today.

This is the highest number of heats made by SMS-II on a particular shift as well as a single day, since inception. The earlier records were of 19 heats in a single shift and 51 heats on a single day on 1st October 2013.

RSP's CEO G S Prasad visited the converter shop floor of SMS-II and congratulated the employees on their stupendous success, the release said.

After commissioning of the New Blast Furnace-V, Durga, the largest Blast Furnace of India, SMS-II has been receiving increased volume of hot metal.

The unit has achieved optimum utilisation of the two existing converters. Under the expansion plan a new converter will be coming up in SMS-II in the near future. A new Continuous Caster has been commissioned successfully recently in addition to the 2 casters at CCM-II.

The SMS-II collective has made precise plans to run the three casters continuously. Ensuring the availability of a slag pot in the ladle bay and organising faster availability of steel ladles has helped in easier dumping.
