CPI-M leader and former Kolkata Mayor Bikash Bhattacharya's participation in a so-called "beef festival" in the city was today questioned by Left Front constituent RSP, which said that it did not behove a politician hurting sentiments of a community - Hindus.

RSP state secretary Khisti Goswami said that a politician should guard against hurting the sentiments of a community.

"We may have our personal choices and preferences, but when you are a politician and in public life, you need to take precaution before hurting sentiments of the people of a community," Goswami said.

He, however, told PTI that Bhattacharya was learnt to have apologised to his party in the matter.

Last week, a beef festival was organised by a city-based NGO "Bhasa O Chetana Samiti" which was attended by leaders and representatives from different walks of life.

The participants included, among others, former West Bengal minister Abdur Rezzak Mollah, Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya and writer Subodh Sarkar.

"I can eat anything in my personal life, but making that public is not a good thing when I am in public life," Goswami observed.
