The North Assam unit of RSS today denied its alleged involvement in the recent Silapathar incident and said it would take legal action against those spreading canard against it.

"It is unfortunate that some people are attempting to connect the RSS with the incident (in Dhemaji district of Assam)", RSS Prasar Pramukh Shankar Das said in a press release here.

"The organisation perceived that a certain section conspired to tarnish the image of the RSS after being envious of it as it was accepted by the people in Assam for its good work in the state since 1946", he said.

Condemning the Silapathar incident, RSS demanded that the culprits be immediately identified and duly punished, Das said.

The incident took place during a procession taken out by the Nikhil Bharat Bengali Utbasta Sammonnay Samity and subsequent destruction of an office of the All Assam Students' Union (AASU), damage to property and disruption in law and order situation in the area by some miscreants on March 6.

The Assam government has constituted an enquiry committee to probe the circumstances leading to the incident.
