RSS today said it favoured reservation as mandated by Constitution but is opposed to any reservation based on religion.

Addressing a press conference here, RSS Joint General Secretary Dattatreya Hosbole said the Sangh not only favoured the reservation mandated by the Constitution but also passed a resolution in its support in 1981 stating that whatever was enshrined in it (Constitution) was an article of faith.

"But RSS is not in favour of reservation based on religion," he asserted.

Blaming the media for "distorting" the recent comments of RSS chief Mohan Bhagawat on reservation, Hosbole said he had said it should be in the spirit of the Constitution and should not be politicised.

On reported religious conversions, he said it should be stopped in the country while those who desired to return to their religion should be allowed.

To another query on a cow slaughter report in RSS mouth piece 'Panchajanya', Hosbole said matters are published as per the Editor's prudence.
