A 10-year-old boy died after he was hit by a utility vehicle in southwest Delhi's Palam area this evening, prompting protests from the locals.

The incident took place around 4.15 PM on the Palam-Dabri road when a speeding RTV mowed down Krishna. The boy, a resident of Mahavir Enclave, was dragged a few metres by the vehicle.

Krishna was a class-V student of a government school, police said, adding his father is a tractor driver.

His death triggered protests and an irate group of people set the vehicle on fire, police said.

The driver had managed to flee and police have launched a manhunt to nab him.

Police deployed its several personnel in the area to maintain order.

"The child was rushed to a hospital where he was declared brought dead," said a senior police officer.

"The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination. We are tracing the owner of the offending vehicle, and the driver will soon be arrested," he added.

Police are also scanning the CCTV footage from the area to establish the sequence of events leading to the accident.
