The rupee appreciated further from early gains, up 30 paise to quote at 67.72 against the US currency in late morning deals on continued bouts of selling from banks and exporters amid higher local equities.

The domestic unit resumed higher at 67.80 per dollar as against yesterday's closing level of 68.02 at the Interbank Foreign Exchange (Forex) market.

Later, it strengthened to 67.67 before quoting at 67.72 at 1030 hrs.

The domestic unit hovered in a range of 67.84 and 67.67 during morning deals.

The dollar index was higher 0.24% at 99.36 against a basket of six currencies in early trade.

Overseas, the US dollar was firm against the major rivals in early Asian trade, as rising expectations of monetary easing by other major central banks offset fading chances of more rate hikes from the Federal Reserve.

The benchmark BSE Sensex was trading higher by 355.80 points, or 1.48%, at 24,318.01 in late morning trade.
