With the onset of the South West Monsoon, rural limits of the district, particularly Valparai and Pollachi, have been experiencing copious rainfall over the last three days, resulting in rivers starting to fill up.

The continuous rains have resulted in the administration declaring a holiday for schools in Valparai area.

The rain waters entered a few houses in Vazhaithottam in Valparai and also some tea estates, while tourists have been cautioned not to venture into rivers to take bath, official sources said.

Valparai received 142 MM rains, Sholayar catchment area 70 MM, Neerar 170 MM, Chinnakkallar 142 mm and Pollachi 30 MM rains, in the last 24 hours, they said.

The rains in the last four days affected normal life in Valparai and other areas, even as the inflow to Sholayar dam is increasing, they said.

Rains have also affected normal life in nearby Nilgiris district, affecting normal life, particularly major tourist spots like Udhagamandalam, Doddabetta, Mudumalai, Masinagudi, Avalanji and Kothagiri.
