Russia's ambassador to Syria says transport planes have delivered trucks provided by Moscow to help dismantle Syria's chemical weapons.
Ambassador Azamat Kulmukhametov said in remarks carried by the RIA Novosti news agency that the trucks were airlifted yesterday to the Syrian port of Latakia. He said 10 transport planes took part in the effort and more flights will be conducted.
Under the plan by the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, chemicals will be transported from 12 storage sites to Latakia. Russia is providing armoured trucks and other equipment to help transport them.
The chemicals will be then loaded onto Danish and Norwegian ships and shipped to an Italian port, where the most toxic chemicals will be transferred to a US ship for destruction at sea.
