Ottawa police say a Russian diplomat was stabbed at an apartment building near his embassy in Canada.

Police Insp. Murray Knowles said today that the 44-year-old man's injuries were not life-threatening.

Authorities have not released the victim's name and say it's not yet clear what prompted the attack.

A Canadian man was taken into custody with help from Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers who were near the building at the time of the stabbing today morning.

Knowles says no charges have been filed, but that could change. The suspect's identity was not released.

The embassy is expected to release a statement later today.
