S Africa Prez meets Cong leader, calls for strengthening multilateral organisations

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa today expressed concern over growing protectionism and trade barriers

and stressed the need to strengthen multilateral organisations as he met senior Congress leader Anand Sharma here.

Ramaphosa and the former commerce and industry minister also shared concern over the violence and conflict in some regions of the world and the threat of terrorism.

President Ramaphosa apprised Sharma of South Africa's initiative to accelerate job creation and promote investment and reaffirmed his party African National Congress' (ANC) commitment to inclusive and sustainable economic growth, according to a statement issued by Sharma.

They discussed bilateral, regional and global issues of shared concerns like economic slowdown, unemployment, growing intolerance and rising inequalities.

 

Sharma, who is visiting South Africa on the invitation of the ruling ANC, said Ramaphosa expressed concern over growing protectionism and the new trade barriers affecting the movement of goods and services and stressed the need to strengthen multilateral organisations.

In the meeting, Ramaphosa recalled the historic relationship between the ANC and Congress and the solidarity and support of the Congress leadership under former Prime Ministers Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi in the struggle against apartheid.

Sharma conveyed the greetings of Congress chief Rahul Gandhi to Ramaphosa and thanked him for the participation of high-level ANC delegation at the 84th Plenary Session of the Congress party in New Delhi.

The deputy leader of the Congress Parliamentary Party in the Rajya Sabha also met the national executive committee of the ANC and apprised them of the initiatives of the Congress to mobilise the people and consolidate itself.
