Humphrey Mmemezi, provincial head for local government and housing in Gauteng, allegedly spent more than R60,000 (Rs 400,453) on clothing and shoes from stores in Mumbai during an official visit in September last year.

The provincial government had to transfer a large amount into his government-issued credit card after Mmemezi exceeded his limit of R50,000 (Rs 333,482) as he bought expensive designer suits, shoes and party wear, reportedly to attend official government and business functions.

Now Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane has demanded explanations from Mmemeze after the Star daily gave details of his extravagant expenditure in India.

"The Premier views these allegations in a serious light and has therefore requested a formal explanation from (Mmemezi)," her spokesman Xoli Mngambi said in a statement, adding that she would make a decision after receiving this report.

A spokesman for the Gauteng Local Government and Housing Department, Mongeni Mnyani, said that Mmemezi was issued the government credit card so that he would not face inconvenience while carrying out his duties.
