Southern Railway General Manager Ashok K Agarwal and another official today appeared before the Madras High Court bench here in a contempt of court proceedings over non-payment of compensation for land acquired by railways and sought time for clearing the dues of Rs 1.89 crore.

Agarwal and Deputy Chief Engineer S.Manoharan appeared before Justice R Mahadevan and informed the court that they had given a cheque for Rs.Ten crore through the Revenue Divisional Officer of Dindigul for the land acquired at Adiyanoorthu village.

The Judge, who had earlier directed the officials to submit an affidavit, posted the matter to July 13 for further hearing after they sought time for payment of the balance amount of Rs.1.89 crore to the petitioner.

The contempt petition has been filed by T.Meenakshi, Managing Director of East India Corporation, who submitted that Railways did not make the payment for the land acquired for the Karur-Dindigul Railway project despite the court having on June 19, 2014 directed it to settle the amount fixed by the Dindigul District Collector within six weeks.

Later, the court gave eight more weeks time to settle the dues. Even then the railways did not pay the amount, the petitioner said.
