Ruling Shiromani Akali Dal and BJP government in Punjab is gagging the media in the state, the leader of opposition alleged today.
Alleging government-sponsored action in the blackout of a Punjabi news channel, Charanjit Singh Channi claimed that any channel that airs anything against the state government is blacked out and taken off the air.
"This is gagging the voice of the media," Channi charged.
The Congress leader said he has written a letter to the Governor requesting him to intervene in the matter.
Channi said this is not the first time that such an incident has come to light. Even on earlier occasions, news channels were forced to shut shop under the pressure of the main cable operator in the state.
