Several activists of the SAD's women wing today staged a demonstration here demanding immediate resignation of AAP legislator Sukhpal Singh Khaira following the issuance of summons to him by a Fazilka court in a drug case.
The protesters, led by their president Jagir Kaur, made attempts to reach the AAP leader's residence and vowed to not allow him entry into the state legislative assembly on Monday -- the first day of the winter session.
Addressing the protesters, Kaur said the AAP had lost all moral and ethical right to continue in its role as the main opposition party in Punjab Assembly following the summon.
She appealed to the Speaker of the state assembly Rana K P Singh to direct Khaira not to enter the premises of the legislative assembly on November 27, when its winter session starts.
"This is necessary to save the august chair of leader of opposition from being besmirched," said Kaur.
She asked AAP's national convener Arvind Kejriwal to "come clean" and tell Punjabis why he was "shielding" a drug accused whose "accomplices" have been awarded the maximum sentence of 20 years imprisonment.
"In case, Kejriwal does not remove Khaira from the post of leader of opposition and expel him from the primary membership of the party, it will be assumed that he has also been compromised by Khaira and it would be proved that the party is receiving drug money as funding," she said.
Khaira said the AAP had made drugs addiction in Punjab a prime issue in the last Assembly elections and now after the court's summon to Khaira in a drug case, "it is incumbent on the part of the party to take action against him".
