Noted scholar Sadanand More, who is the president of the all India Marathi literary conference today disapproved of the comments made by author Salman Rushdie against Jnanpith Award winner Bhalchandra Nemade.
"No one should say anything disrespectful to anyone. One should observe a certain standard while making any comment," More said.
He was reacting to the controversial comment made by Rushide, a Booker winning author author.
In a function last week, Nemade had said he found little literary merit in Rushdie's work 'Midnight Children'. The senior Marathi author also suggested that English be eliminated from the education system, claiming that many other languages across the world were dying because of it.
He had also criticised the work of Indian-origin English writers like V S Naipaul and Rushdie for "pandering to the West"
Responding to Nemade's comment, Rushdie had tweeted "Grumpy old b*****d. Just take your prize and say thank you nicely. I doubt you've even read the work you attack."
After the comment, the literary world had rallied behind Nemade.
Incidentally, the Jnanpith Award Winner may not attend the 88th edition of the Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Sahitya Sammelan (ABMSS) to be held at Ghuman in Punjab in April this year.
"Nemade has been invited. As a the president of ABMSS, I appealed to him to come for the event. It is up to him whether he will attend the event or not," More said.
