The Rourkela Steel Plant today said it was among units of SAIL supplying chequered plates of special sizes to be used for construction of temporary bridges, pathways and floors during the Mahakumbh Mela in 2013.

"SAIL will be supplying nearly 10,000 tonne of chequered plates and structurals which will be used in temporary pontoon bridges, pathways, floors and constructions at ghats," a RSP release said.

RSP has bagged the order for supplying chequered plates in 6 x 1000 x 5000 mm thickness, which is not a regular size, it said.

The slabs are being made in the continuous casting machine shops and special chequered campaign rolling is also being undertaken at the hot strip mill, it said.

Though RSP, normally manufactured chequered coil weighing 16 tonne for logistics, it has been making special provision to produce coils of 13 tonne to match the specifications, it said.

For making pontoon bridges, SAIL has supplied plates and structurals from its other plants BSL (Bokaro), BSP (Bhilai), DSP (Durgapur) and ISP (Burnpur) to Public Works Department (PWD) of Uttar Pradesh.

Each pontoon took approximately 5.5 tonne of steel.

SAIL TMT is being used for construction of four ghats at Araal, Boat Club, Balua and Bargad by UP Irrigation department.

It said SAIL's units had supplied requirements during the 2001 Mahakumbha Mela.
