Sailor dies of gunshot injury on board naval ship

A 23-year-old Navy sailor today died of a gunshot injury from his weapon on board a ship under the Southern Naval Command, and an inquiry is on into the incident, a defence spokesman said.

The sailor, Raxit Kumar Parmar, a native of Kheda district of Gujarat, was on sentry duty on board INS Jamuna when the incident occurred at about 7.30 am.

He sustained serious injuries due to a gunshot fired from the weapon he was carrying, the spokesman said.

The injured sailorwas immediately rushed to the naval hospital INHS Sanjivani, where he breathed his last at 9.40 am.

A case of unnatural death has been registered with the police and a board of inquiry (BoI) has been instituted to determine the circumstances which led to his death, the spokesman said.
 

The sailor is survived by his parents and a brother who have been informed of his demise.
