Punjab Congress president Sunil Jakhar today said BJP candidate for the Gurdaspur bypoll, Swaran Salaria, should have come clean on the rape case against him at the time of filing his nomination.
Jakhar, the Congress nominee for the October 11 bypoll, said those involved in such crimes would have to answer the people of Punjab, whose cultural ethos were being endangered by these kind of political leaders.
Speaking at a meeting earlier, Jakhar exhorted people to cast their votes judiciously, and not to elect such "immoral people" to any institution.
The Punjab Congress had yesterday urged the Election Commission to cancel Salaria's candidature alleging he had failed to inform the poll body about the rape case filed against him in Mumbai.
Salaria, however, today said the Congress was indulging in "character assassination" by alleging that he concealed information about the case.
Jakhar also said that unemployment was one of the biggest issues being faced by Punjab.
"Instead of providing the promised jobs to youths, the Modi government is busy filling the pockets of big industrialists, while the country's economy is being ruined," he said, citing reports that there had been a 26 per cent increase in the income of top industrialists of the country.
On the other hand, small businessmen and traders are extremely angry with the prime minister for hitting them with the "GST missile", he added.
