The deputy commissioner of the excise department today appeared before the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) which had summoned him in connection with a case of sale of illicit liquor.

He said a woman and her husband, who were caught selling illicit liquor by the DCW in Narela, had 31 cases lodged against them in 17 years.

The DC informed the women's panel that the department had a shortage of manpower and only five officers of the Excise Department were responsible for the entire outer district.

He said minors and women were being used by mafia to transport illegal liquor in small vehicles through fields on the border.

Following a brutal attack on a woman who helped the commission bust a bootlegging racket in Narela last week, the commission had summoned the Delhi Commissioner of Police (Rohini) and the deputy commissioner of the Excise Department to get details about the action taken in the issue of liquor being sold illegally in some parts of the city.

The DCP (Rohini) sought more time to file a reply following which the commission gave the official two days for the same.

"Despite the cases and the police being aware of the accused being habitual offenders, no steps to restrict their activities have been taken.

"This is why these persons have been operating with complete impunity. Strict action needs to be taken in the matter," DCW chief Swati Maliwal said.
