A special TADA court here today pulled up Navi Mumbai police while hearing an application filed by extradited gangster Abu Salem opposing handcuffing.

"Do you think he will flee amid the security," asked special judge G A Sanap, who directed police not to handcuff Salem till the application was decided.

Navi Mumbai police had said that it had received an intelligence input that he might attempt to run away.

"You have said in your affidavit that he will flee, but why should he be given the opportunity," asked the judge.

The judge also asked why a report on this important aspect was not in writing.

"Don't create any problems and don't multiply the issues. Let me work on merits of the case," he said.

When the prosecution told the court that Salem, an accused in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case among others, was absconding for seven years, the court said decision must be taken on person-to-person basis.

The judge, however, said police was free to approach the court afresh if Salem was to be taken out of Mumbai.
