Samba mishap: death toll reaches 17

Balbir Singh, driver of the truck died at GMC hospital in Jammu this evening, police official said.

A truck carrying pilgrims, who were engaged in setting a community kitchen at Amarnath, were returning back to their homes in UP when it skidded off the road and rolled down deep into gorge near Zamoorha Morh in Mansar belt of Samba district yesterday.

A total of 34 pilgrims were reportedly travelling in the truck. Most of killed pilgrims belonged to MP, UP and Delhi.

The mishap occurred when the truck driver lost balance while negotiating a curve at Zamoorha Morh after which the truck rolled down several feet deep into the gorge.

 

This was second major accident involving Amarnath yatris in Jammu region. 15 pilgrims were killed when a SRTC bus bringing pilgrims back from the yatra, had rolled down into a gorge near Ramban on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway on the night of July 14.
