Sambalpur farmers lodge complaint against insurance company

Annoyed over the irregular disbursement of crop insurance amount under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY), the farmers today lodged complaint with the district collector Samarth Verma and alleged that they had not received actual insurance claim.

Secretary of Sambalpur Zilla Krushak Surakhya Sangathan, Byomakesh Thakur said many farmers of the district have received less amount of the money than what they should get for the crop loss during the 2017 Kharif season.

The farmers of Sason Gram Panchayat incurred 35 per cent crop loss during 2017 Kharif season. However, many farmers have received insurance money for 21.6 per cent crop loss, he pointed out.

 

Thakur said, similar problem has been faced by farmers of various parts of the district. Moreover, many farmers have not received the insurance money at all also.

A farmer, Satyanarayan Pandey of Talab said:, "As per the report, I should get Rs 33,790 for the crop loss, incurred during the 2017 Kharif season. But the insurance company has disbursed only Rs 19,000."

Pandey had come to the office of the district collector with the receipt of the premium he had paid to the insurance company to insure his crop.

According to the farmers, the Kisinda Gram Panchayat of Naktideul Block in the district suffered 29. 25 per cent crop loss during 2017 Kharif season.

Around 200 farmers of the Gram Panchayat had insured their crop but only one farmer has received the insurance money amounting to only Rs 7,000 for crop loss.

Sources said, 33,976 farmers of Sambalpur district had paid premium of Rs 57.02 crore to Tata AIG for the insurance of the crop during the 2017 Kharif season.
