In a bid to ensure smooth movement of vehicles and prevent traffic snarl, a traffic police station will be set up in this western Odisha city soon.
The creation of the traffic police station would improve the traffic scenario of the city, Superintendent of the police, Akhileswar Singh said today.
"An inspector will be the in charge of the traffic police station. Moreover, two sub inspectors and two assistant sub inspectors besides 48 traffic constables will be posted in the traffic police station," said Singh.
The traffic police station will function from the traffic police outpost of the city, which is located adjacent to the town police station here. "Some renovation work is going in the building now. We have taken a decision to inaugurate the traffic police station by the end of this month," he added.
The traffic staffs, posted in the traffic police station, will manage the traffic of Sambalpur and Burla. However, later they will manage the traffic of the entire corporation area.
At present, 50 police personnel headed by a sub inspector control the traffic of entire city. "The traffic scenario of the city is a matter of concern for the residents now. Almost all the arterial roads of the city witness traffic mess every day. Be it the Golebazar chhak, Church Chak, Laxmi talkies Chhak or the Khetrajppur chhak of the city, one can see traffic mess every day.
Moreover, haphazard parking could also be seen at several places of the city. One can see vehicles parked in front of the shops and business establishment creating severe traffic congestion," said a local resident, Bijaya Sahu.
However, the residents of the city have exuded hopefulness that change would come in the traffic scenario of the city after the traffic police station is opened here.
"The enforcement will be better and modern equipments will also be used to streamline the traffic of the city after the traffic police station is opened. As the city has expanded and the number of vehicles have also increased, a traffic police station was essential for the city," said a commuter, Rajat Kumar Tripathy.
Another local resident, Bikash Sahu said, "the traffic police station is a long pending demand of the people of the city. The rash driving, haphazard parking, traffic rule violation could be checked effectively after the traffic police station is opened.
