Independent legislator from Baghmara, Samuel M Sangma, today joined the United Democratic Party (UDP) as it's associate member, a party statement said.
The strength of the UDP has now increased to 9 in the House of 60 while that of the regional democratic alliance, formed ahead of the February poll between the UDP and the Hill State People's Democratic Party, has increased to 11.
Samuel was welcomed by UDP chief Donkupar Roy, who is also the Assembly Speaker, in presence of the party leaders from the Garo Hills region, UDP Garo Hills secretary Utzol Ch Sangma said in the statement.
Sangma is the second Independent MLA who decided to associate with the UDP which is the main ally of the National People's Party - led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government.
Independent legislator SK Sunn had also joined the UDP as an associate member to increase the strength of the BJP-backed Meghalaya Democratic Alliance.
