A joint team comprising personnel of revenue department and local police, chasing a truck believed to be carrying illegally mined sand, returned empty-handed today as their vehicle was waylaid by suspected sand mafia.

The incident occurred in the morning hours when the team picked the trail of the truck near Virar bifurcation on the Mumbai-Ahmebad Highway, said assistant police inspector C D Jangam of Virar police station.

The patrolling team, led by Talathi R J Balchim, was chasing the truck when an SUV came in front of them and waylaid the official vehicle to let the truck escape, he said.

The occupants of the vehicle threatened the officials of the team.

A case was registered under various sections of IPC and section 184 of Motor Vehicles Act, police said.
