Suspected members of sand mafia today tried to attack a woman Tehsildar when she asked them about ferrying the illegally mined building material in a vehicle and assaulted her driver when he intervened, police said.
Acting on a tip off that some people were illegally carrying sand on a tractor-trolley at Saghai village near Piparia town in the district, the Tehsildar, Vinky Singh, went there for an inspection along with a team.
The moment she spotted the sand-laden tractor, she asked the persons sitting inside about it. Some of the tractor occupants ran towards her and tried to hit her with a shovel, Pipapria Police Station In-charge Lovekush Sharma said.

However, when her driver Jabbar Khan intervened and tried to stop them, they hit him with the tool on his head causing grievous injuries, the official said.
Sensing trouble, the Tehsildar and her team left the spot and admitted the injured driver in a government hospital.
Police have registered a case against unidentified persons. They suspect members of sand mafia were behind the incident and have launched a hunt for them.
