Some members of a mining mafia today attacked a police team and tried to snatch the pistol of a trainee sub-inspector when they were caught red-handed illegally mining sand on the Yamuna riverbed here.

The police team was attacked by the gang members at Barauth Khadar under Naujheel police station, Superintendent of Police (Rural) Aditya Kumar Shukla said.

"The attempt of the gang members to snatch the pistol of trainee sub-inspector Sumit Kumar was foiled due to timely arrival of a heavy police force," Shukla said.

The police officer said efforts were being made to nab the gang members.

He said the department would also inquire how could the trainee sub-inspector go to nab illegal miners along with just two policemen, without informing senior officials.

Shukla said that action would also be taken against erring police personnel if they had not followed instructions.
