Well-known carnatic vocalist Aruna Sairam has been selected for this year's 'Sangita Kalanidhi' award of the Music Academy here.
At its meeting held today, the Academy's executive committee unanimously selected Sairam for the award and also announced the winners of various other awards.
"Sairam, one of the most popular carnatic vocalists, has been chosen for the coveted Sangita Kalanidhi award. Over an illustrious career spanning decades, she can be credited with taking the art to a very wide audience both in India and abroad," the Academy's President, N Murali said in an release.
Sairam would preside over the 92nd annual conference of the academy to be held from December 15, 2018 to January 1, 2019.
Veteran Mridangam artiste 'Thanjavur' R Ramadas was selected for the 'Sangita Kala Acharya' award.
"Having had tutelage under the legendary Sangita Kalanidhi 'Palghat' T S Mani Iyer, he has trained several students some of whom are senior artistes in that field," the release said.

Thiruvananthapuram-based K Omana Kutty, who taught music for several years within the academic framework was also selected for the 'Sangita Kala Acharya' award.
The 'TTK award' would be presented to Kalyani Ganesan, who teaches the art of veena playing to several students.
The other 'TTK award' would be conferred on SRG Rajanna, an acclaimed practioner of the traditional art of Nagaswaram.
Dr Prameela Gurumurthy, a trained carnatic and Hindustani musician and the present vice chancellor of Tamil Nadu University of Fine Arts was selected for the 'Musicologist' award.
The 'Sangita Kalanidhi' and other music awards would be presented at the 'Sadas' of the music festival on January, 1, 2019, the release said.
The Dance award -- 'Nritya Kalanidhi' title would be conferred upon eminent Bharathanatyam exponent and guru Shanta Dhananajayan.
A trained Kathakali and Carnatic music exponent, Shanta along with her husband and dance partner, V P Dhananjayan has created several innovative dance productions.
The award would be presented to her at the inauguration of dance festival on January 3 next.
