The 35-year-old actress is best known for roles in TV shows 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' and more recently in the short-lived CW drama 'Ringer', reported Digital Spy online.
The potential new series is now in development at 20th Century Fox TV. Currently untitled, the show will focus on a married couple who misbehave when their kids are not home.
Gellar apparently showed interest in the project after reading a spec script written by Shepard Boucher, a staff writer for TBS's Men at Work.
The untitled show will be offered to major networks in the next few weeks.
Gellar and husband Freddie Prinze Jr welcomed a second child in September 2012.
