In an incident of pre-poll violence, a village head was allegedly killed by persons from the rival camp in the district, police said today.

Hariprakash, the two-time sarpanch of Garh Mirakpur village, was shot and killed last night by assailants, when he was returning to his village with his wife.

The slain sarpanch's brother has alleged that the rival camp was upset with Hariprakash's decision to stand for a third term in the sarpanch election expected next month.

Sonepat SP Ashok Kumar said the police have registered a case against seven persons on the basis of the complaint and constituted an SIT under two DSPs to investigate the case.

The body was handed over to the family after post-mortem.
