A son of a village sarpanch was allegedly killed by Naxals in the insurgency-hit Dantewada district of southern Chhattisgarh, police said today.

Joga Markam (22), a native of Bade Lakhpal village, was axed to death by ultras late last night near Gatam village under Katekalyan police station limits, a senior police official told PTI.

"The exact reason behind the attack was yet to be ascertained," he said.

The incident came to light this morning when some villagers informed police that the blood-stained body of a youth was lying on Katekalyan-Dantewada road. Later, he was identified as the son of Bheemaram Markam, sarpanch of Bade Lakhapal village, he said.

Joga Markam was pursuing a computer course in Dantewada town. On Sunday, he had gone to Katekalyan to meet his younger brother, who is studying there in a residential school, the official said.

While he was returning to Dantewada during night hours, the rebels attacked him with an axe killing him on the spot, he said.

Soon after being informed, the security forces were rushed to the spot and the body was recovered, he said.

A search has been launched in the forest to nab the attackers, he added.
