Sarv khap demands ban on same gotra marriages

A khap committee meeting held in Shamli has demanded an amendment to the Hindu Marriage Act to ban marriages within the same gotra.

The president of the sarv khap committee Omprakash Malik said that the Union government should ban the same gotra marriages.

He demanded an amendment in Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, disallowing marriages between same gotra.

The meeting was held in Shamli town in which participants also criticised Union Law Minister D V Sadanand Gowda for his statement on khaps.

Gowda on Thursday last had termed all 'customary courts' like Khap panchayats as illegal and unconstitutional and asked state governments to check such set up as it was a serious issue.
 
Several people including Baburam Panwar, Harbir Singh, Ratan Singh, Mukesh Tomar, Rajbir Singh participated in the meeting.
