The Supreme Court has allowed the Institute of Rural Management Anand (IRMA) to conduct its own entrance exam to admit students for the academic year 2013.

IRMA had filed a writ petition in the  Supreme Court of India challenging the directive of All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to admit students based on five entrance tests – CAT, MAT, XAT, ATMA and CMAT.

"The basic contention of IRMA in the writ petition was to the effect that such a directive of AICTE is interfering with the functional autonomy of IRMA", the institute said in a release.

According to the institute,  the entrance examination designed by it is necessary to maintain the standard of education and to spot the best talents suitable for programme offered by IRMA.

IRMA is pleading for its separate entrance test because the premier rural management institute is running a unique rural management program and needs to test aspiring students in social awareness and commitment, the release added.

In its hearing held on November 6, 2012 in the Honorable Supreme Court of India, IRMA has been allowed to conduct its own written test and admit students for the academic year 2013.

IRMA’s entrance test is scheduled to be held on Sunday, November 11, 2012 across 27 cities all over the country.
