A team of National Commission for Scheduled Castes today visited Kanavani village and met victims of a clash that took place there between Dalits and Gujjars last week.

The team, led by commission secretary J N Chamber, spent nearly one and half hours in the village.

One person was killed and over a dozen were injured in the clash between members of the two castes over a piece of land on April 29.

"It is a tragic and shameful incident. We have talked to people and will submit the report to the commission on Monday," Chamber said.

The commission will forward the report to UP Chief Minister, Union Home Ministry and other officials concerned, he said.

District Magistrate A V Rajamouli, SSP Preetinder Singh, SP (City) Yogesh Singh, SDM Rajesh Yadav, Deputy Superintendent of Police Vishwajit Srivastava and other officials were present during the visit of the NCSC team.

Rajamouli said, "Guilty officials will be punished. Nobody will be spared.

"Presently, our aim is to maintain communal harmony and peace in the village and prevent further violence," he said.
