The Supreme Court today dismissed a petition seeking direction to the Centre to reduce taxes on petroleum products and bring tax uniformity on fuels, saying "it is for Parliament to decide".
A bench headed by Chief Justice H L Dattu declined to go into the PIL filed by a Delhi-based advocate seeking formulation of a "uniform retail selling price mechanism in a form of MRP (maximum retail price) to overcome the cascading effect of VAT (value-added tax) and other taxes".
The petition, filed by advocate Ankur Yadav, said discrepancies in prices of petrol and diesel give rise to several illegalities.
